Tips to remember about food storage:
Choose food your family will eat
Keep food in the driest, coolest, and darkest place in the house
Transfer opened packages into screw-top jars or airtight containers to prevent insects and rodents problems
Don't forget food for your pets
Eat perishable foods first
Shelf life:
Use within six months:
Evaporated milk
Dried fruit in metal containers
Dry crisp crackers in metal containers
Gum
Use within one year:
Nonfat dry or whole milk
Canned meat (poultery, fish)
Canned condensed soups
Dehydrated soups
Canned fruits and fruit juices
Cereal (ready to eat or uncooked) in metal containers
Hydrogenated fats, vegitable oils
Sweets and canned nuts
Instant pudding
Miscellaneous:
- Cocoa (instant)
- Dry cream products
- Flavored beverage products including soda
- Baking powder
May be stored indefinitely:
Sugar
Salt
Honey (may get hard)
Remeber: If your elecrticity is off...
First: Use perishable food and foods from your refrigerator.
Second: Use foods from your freezer (keep a list of freezer contents on the outside to minimize opening the door. Freezers usually keep food cold for at least three days after the power is off.
Third: Begin to use non-perishable foods and staples.
